Certificate Templates
Custom certificate templates are available on the Enterprise plan. All other plans use the default platform template.
Certificate templates let you write the appearance of a completion certificate — layout, fonts, colors, logos, and legal text — using an HTML editor with dynamic variables.
Accessing templates
- Go to Certificates in the sidebar
- Click the Templates tab
The Templates list shows every template in your organization and which one is the default. To see which courses use a specific (non-default) template, check that course's own Edit page.
The default template
Every organization starts with a built-in Default Template. It uses your organization's primary color and logo. You can use it as-is or duplicate it as a starting point for a custom template.
Creating a custom template
- Go to Certificates → Templates
- Click New Template
- Enter a Template name (internal label)
- Edit the HTML in the template editor
Available variables
Use these variables in your HTML — they are replaced with the student's actual data when the certificate is generated:
| Variable | Replaced with |
|---|---|
{{student_name}} | Student's full name |
{{course_title}} | Name of the completed course |
{{completion_date}} | Date of completion (formatted as "May 9, 2026") |
{{org_name}} | Your organization's name |
{{credential_id}} | Unique certificate ID (for verification) |
Example usage in HTML:
<h1>Certificate of Completion</h1>
<p>This certifies that <strong>{{student_name}}</strong> has successfully
completed <strong>{{course_title}}</strong> on {{completion_date}}.</p>
<p>Issued by {{org_name}}</p>
<small>Credential ID: {{credential_id}}</small>
Styling
The template editor accepts standard HTML and inline CSS. External stylesheets are not supported, but you can include a <style> block at the top of the template.
The output is rendered as a PDF at A4 landscape size (297 × 210 mm). Use fixed pixel or millimeter widths when positioning elements.
Previewing a template
The editor shows a live preview as you type, rendering your HTML/CSS with sample data directly in the browser. Once saved, click Preview to generate an actual sample PDF using your real template — this is exactly what a student's real certificate will look like.
Click Save to store the template.
Setting a template as default
The default template is used for any course that does not have a specific template assigned.
- In the Templates list, open a template
- Click Set as Default
Only one template can be the default at a time.
Assigning a template to a specific course
- Open the course → Edit
- Under Certificate Template, select a template (or leave it on Use organization default)
- Click Save
Students who complete this course get a certificate using the selected template, regardless of which template is set as the organization default.
